Have you ever wondered what happens to the climbing gear that has been retired from active use? At Green Peak Gear we collect unwanted climbing gear and make it into other products such as dog leads and mats. The products that we make are sold through our Amazon Webstore and at events we attend. We donate some of the gear we collect to other organisations for second use – examples include play-group and a bird sanctuary. Gear that we cannot reuse is recycled. The gear is collected by participating climbing walls who have a Green Peak Gear bin that we empty on a regular basis. The initial pilot was based in North West England, and we are now looking to expand our collection base. Green Peak Gear was established in mid 2012 with active support from the BMC. Our profits are donated to ACT (Access and Conservation Trust). Following the success of the pilot we are now looking to recruit further volunteers to help develop the scheme.
Green Peak Gear has an active website and social media presence which we would like to develop further. We need to make ourselves more visible in the climbing community and to a broader customer base for our products. We would like to recruit a volunteer to write and promote content for our website and social media. There is a strong link between our web presence and both the sales of our products and the volume of gear we collect. Activities are likely to include:
- Talking to other members of the team on a regular basis to find out what the latest activities are
- Writing and publishing content the Green Peak Gear WordPress website, and for publication elsewhere
- Generating ad replying to Facebook and Twitter posts
- Contacting other organisations regarding the promotion of Green Peak Gear through their websites and social media – for example climbing walls and walking groups
We are looking for you to bring energy and enthusiasm to this activity, which offers the opportunity provide a valuable service for climbers who are concerned about the environment. You should have good writing skills and the ability to create interesting articles. You should also be competent in using websites and social media and be happy establishing new business contacts. We would like to have at least one new article on the website each week.
This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in running a social enterprise, and to gain valuable skills and knowledge. Previous volunteers have successfully gained paid employment while involved with Green Peak Gear.
